The mechanical device is for checking numbers, and programming non-validity. The device comprises ten "million-count" shafts on which are mounted ten "hundred-thousand-count" flat spirals with read and punch heads. When the shafts are rotated the read heads move along the hundred turn spirals to enable reading of the individual digits. Each turn of the spiral consists of ten "hundred-sectors". Each sector consists of ten radial lines intersecting with ten concentric circles to make up a hundred points by radial and rotational position. The read head has ten radial light sources and photo diodes and a flexible die to punch out holes. When a number is selected on the control panel, the shafts are rotated as equired and if light is detected by the photo diode an alarm is sounded.
