The top edge of the bottom work roll of rolling mills such as four-high rolling mills can be adjusted to the desired roll line by shims. The extracted roll can be adjusted to the roll line by worm-gear operated lifting screws which raise the extraction slide with the roll housings. Shims between the bottom of the slide and protruding above the top of the lifting screw table are then carried away by drive dogs when the new roll is returned into the stand. This introduces any required shims without manual labour. No other lifting tackle is required and no time is wasted.
