Aq prepns. for textile treatment contain acrylamide polymers prepd. in the presence of radical formers and mercaptans contg. gps. with a basic N atom. Used to impart stiff and hydrophobic finishes to textiles upon drying. Also as filling finishes for cellulose fibres such as cotton, linen, rayon, for treating synthetic fibre textiles, mixed textiles and wool, as ingredients for schreinerising finishes; as finishes for clothing materials and interlinings, as sizes which react with HCHO condensates and can be fixed on the fibre to form wash-resistant finishes. The stiffness can be varied by incorporating other components in the polymer, e.g. acrylic esters. The polymers are compatible with the other components in the prepn. and the aq. prepns. do not yellow when acidic substances are added to vary the mol. wt. of the polymer. Generally, these copolymers contg. amino end gps. have increased affinity for the acid gps. of fibres and dyestuffs.
