In a process for melting down fine (or coarse) iron scrap swarf or turnings, iron ore or pig iron, where the charge is mixed and melted, and carbon added, the liquid iron flows along a runner which is accessible from above. The granular part of the charge can be influenced magnetically, and is added tot he surface of the melt in the runner, then being drawn into the melt by magnetic force. The baked granular C is also added similarly; pref. the runner slopes upwards, a travelling magnetic field being used to carry the melt up the runner. Used for processing of iron ore dust which is difficult to add to blast- or electric-furnaces.
