There is a horizontal cylindrical probe (2) in whose lateral wall is a longitudinal groove (4) for removing a sample of a determined volume of material. The probe is mounted in a breech (3) formed by a sleeve coaxial to the probe which is movable which the sleeve. Drive means which draw at least the probe (2) through an axial distance between a withdrawn position at which the groove (4) is in a discharge zone (9) such as a hopper and a sampling position in which the groove (4) is in the sampling zone. Guide slots (33, 34) enable the probe to be turned with respect to the breech (3) when the probe is in either the sampling or the discharge position.
