The gas turbine unit is partic. intended for operating in the 6,000-10,000 kW region, and comprises a multi-part housing (1, 2, 3) containing a turbine (4, 6, 7) and a compressor (5) arranged on in-line shafts (8, 10). The turbine comprises a centripetal stage (4) followed by at least one axial-flow stage (6) combined with a two-stage centrifugal compressor with inter-cooling and a dual-entry low-pressure stage. The centripetal turbine may be a single-outlet (17) turbine having two axial-flow stages (6, 7) at its downstream end. The compressor may be on a common shaft (10) with the turbine stage (4), whilst the axial-flow turbine stages are on a separate shaft (8). The blades of the turbine (4) may contain ducts for cooling air.
