A strip of metal is fed with a step-wise motion under the punch which stamps out cross-shaped links. These cross-shaped links are then fed to the punch (26) where they are then formed to a cup shape by folding the arms of the cross upwards. The partly formed link drops into tube (34) and is supported by slider (38) which is then at the top of its stroke. A second cross-shaped link is pushed over the cup-shaped link and is joined to it by pressing the ends of the arms of the lower link over the centre of the cross of the upper link. The upper link is then formed to a cup shaped and the process is continuously repeated.
