Terrain perspective display radar - compensates weakness of distant echoes to produce even brightness

The antenna (1) is sharply focussed in the azimuthal direction and direction mainly along the ground. It scans the area to be surveyed. A horizontal deflection device (6, 8) controls the picture element on the screen in accordance with the antenna-azimuth angle. A vertical deflection unit (12, 13) moves each picture point vertically up from the screen edge when a pulse is sent out. Its vertical velocity is proportional to the product of the reflected power received and the reciprocal of the distance of the reflecting point. A device (9, 11) controls the reflected signal gain in accordance with the distance to the reflecting point, so that the intensity of the reflected signal, and thus the picture point brightness is independent of the distance.
