The vibratory or fluidised bed drier is for use in drying powder or granular materials. At least one chamber contains spheres mounted below the air through flow aperture in the base of the unit. The drier cross section is filled with a plate to form the top chamber wall which has a series of air flow slots cut into it. The spheres (28) are a non inflammable material. The spheres are packed into the base chamber (24) in such a way that they act as a flame lock or safety system. The base and top surfaces are apertured and corrugated to allow passage of the gas.
