Method is for detoxifying solns. contg. hypochlorites with heavy metal salts. A heavy metal salt soln. is first reacted with an alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide and/or carbonate to ppte. the hydroxide and/or carbonate and this ppte. is then added to the hypochlorite-contg. soln. Process is used to treat effluent from the textile, paper, dye house, printing, fats and soap industries, esp. the scrubbing soln. for Cl-contg. exhaust gases, e.g., from Fe pickling. Almost complete decompsn. of the hypochlorite occurs in a short time using only small amts. of heavy metal salt.
