The thermal storage capacity of a solid is improved by using the principle of heterogeneous evapn. A mixt. of water and a solid with a high heat of absorption for ammonia is used as the absorber; and the high heat of absorption is maintained, and/or the useful concn. - and temp. - range of the mixt. is widened, and/or the vapour pressure of the degassed mixt. is lowered. The pressure of the ammonia is pref. Raised to increase the absorption at a given temp. The solid employed is pref. a halide, sulphate, chromate, carbonate, chlorate, or nitrate of the alkali(ne earth)- or transition- metals, or of the metals of the 3rd, 4th and 5th gps. of the periodic system, or of the actinides or lanthanides, or mixt. of these salts; but the esp. pref. solid is lithium chloride.
