The switching process changes the vehicle operational state, and is tripped at particular points of its journey by a.c. carrying line sections. The line section (40) extends from a particular point to a point at the track (3, 4) at which the (original) operational state must be restored. The line section can be coupled to a switching element (relay) in the vehicle. Owing to the coupling with the line, the relay takes an operating position which produces the operational state change, and maintains it only during the presence of the coupling. Each of the transmitters (7, 7') is associated with a compensating transmitter (21, 21') on the same section of the track.
