Mixts. of cellulosic and synthetic fibres can be coloured by impregnating them, in an aq. organic medium with aq. compsns. contg. (a) organic colourants (viz. pigments and/or disperse dyes); (b) surfactants (either ionic or non-ionic); (c) carries of limited aq. solubility (e.g. biphenyl, benzophenone); (d) organic solvents (e.g. hexane or benzene); and (e) thickeners (e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose, alginates) and then fixing the dyeings or prints in the usual way, of the organic solvent (d) is soluble in water (e.g. alcohols or esters), the carrier (c) can be omitted. Because of difficulties inherent in dyeing such mixts. pigment printing is often used, but the prints often have poor fastness to rubbing and a poor handle. Dyes can be used if water-soluble glycol derivs. are used as solvents for them, but the choice of dyes is limited; the solvents act as retarders of dyeing of the synthetic fibre component, as a result of which high-fixation temp. are necessary, but this tends to yellow the cellulose component and impair the handle. Process overcomes these difficulties and gives level dyeings and prints characterized by good solidity, brilliance and intensity and good wet fastness. In addn. the print pastes and pad-baths ae stable and can be prepd. in advance.
