The barrel handling installation conveys with the bung holes facing sideways in stepped time through a number of cleaning stations (3). The barrels are then moved to a bung hole locating station, the holes being turned uppermost for filling. The conveyor comprises one or several successive oscillating double beams fitted with paired cross supports and barrel support blocks. At the locating station, the support block comprises two rolls across the conveying line, one being driven. A height adjustable feeler locates the bung hole. There is a height adjusting fill valve over the block in the filling station.
