Prepn. of dihydroxy-spirobisindanes (I) comprises heating the corresp. dihydroxy-diphenylpropane (II) with an acidic solid catalyst at 80-250 degrees C, opt. in presence of an inert solvent. Pref. the catalyst is acid-activated fuller's earth. (I) are intermediates for epoxy-resins, polycarbonates and polycarboxylic esters, and are also antioxidants and stabilisers for polyolefins and polyurethanes. The use of corrosive and polluting liq. acid catalysts is avoided and work up is easy requiring no washing or neutralising. The by-products, phenol and hydroxy-trialkylhydroxyphenylindane, can both be recovered for reuse.
