Hf surgical appts. comprises at least one terminal (4, 9, 10) for each of monopolar active electrodes (2), bipolar electrodes (11) and a neutral electrode (3). When the connection between the neutral electrode and its terminal on the appts. is interrupted, a protector circuit cuts off supply of energy from the hf generator (1) to the active electrode, and indicates this by an alarm signal. Connected to the voltage source parallel to the hf generator is a second hf generator (17) which can be connected to the voltage source independently by closing a switch (18), and which only supplies hf current to the electrode terminals (10) for the bipolar electrodes. If the neutral electrode is not connected to the surgical appts., bipolar operation is not prevented by the protector circuit.
