The reciprocating piston engine, comprises an exhaust-driven turbo-charger (10) containing a compressor (9) and a turbine (8). Under low partial load conditions, at least at low speed, the compressor supplies the turbine whilst at least part of the exhaust gas is fed to the turbine during the early part of the expansion stroke. Each cylinder may have an inlet (5) and an outlet valve (6) whilst additionally the exhaust timing is advanced as a function of the engine load condition. The valve may be operated via a lever (14) swivelling on an adjustable pivot and having a tapered surface (16) on which the valve rocker (13) acts.
