In the prodn. of CsOH or RbOH from the corresp. alum using an ion exchanger, an aq. soln. of the alum is passed over an anion exchanger charged with OH ions and an anionic complexing agent of the aminoacetic acid type, pref. EDTA, and the Al-free soln. is used as such or dried. The hydroxides are valuable intermediates in the prodn. of the corresp. alkali cpds. The complexing agent prevents the pptn. of Al hydroxide or the formation of Cs aluminate and the process is carried out in a single stage. It gives almost quantitative yields of pure CsOH or RbOH. The anion exchanger can be regenerated simply by treatment with NaOH soln.
