The dishwasher contains a filter consisting of a funnel-shaped fine mesh sieve (6) which leads into a finer mesh cylinder (8) which in the drainage trough (2) defines a connecting pipe (3) for the emptying duct (7) and of a large mesh sieve (9) mounted inside the said cylinder. The fine sieve (6) extends from the level (12) of the water when the pump circulates to the normal water level (13) when the pump is stationary whilst the finer mesh cylinder (8) extends from the circulating water level (12) to a gap (a) above the base (4) of the drainage trough. The large sieve is in the form of a basket (9) whose base (10) forms the lower end for the emptying duct (7). Even when the large sieve is blocked up at the base of the emptying duct the cleaning action of the machine is still maintained since the water level rises in the wash container and can be drawn off by the pump via the fine sieve. Provided the base of the sieve basket remains free of deposits part of the water can still be drawn off via the emptying duct.
