A current limiting element consists of a mixt. of particles of an electrically conductive material with an elastic insulating material with a positive thermal expansion coefft. (silicone rubber). Heating by overcurrents expands the latter so that the electric circuit is interrupted. Pref. current limiting element consists of particles of Au, ag, Pt etc. coated with the latter, which are embedded in a silicone rubber matrix. The current flows between the terminals and heats the central part in case of overload to break the current. The element is produced cheaply and simply. It can be re-used repeatedly and combines small overall dimensions with a good sensitivity and functional reliability.
