The quadraphonic signal transmission system has a coder to form four independent signals from the output of four microphones (or other signal sources). These signals are transmitted via a 2 or 4 channel path to a decoder. The signals can be received both by a quadraphonic receiver and by a receiver with four discrete channels. The four signals are formed according to: U=aLF+bRF, V=cLR+dRR, S=eLF+fRF, T=gLR+hRR, where a-h are real or imaginary constants. These signals are added to give X=U+V and Y=S+T.
