In the prodn. of a high-melting porous storage substance for a storage cathode by sintering and plating the surface with a more noble metal, before impregnation with emitter, the porous surface is plated by impregnating with soln. of a noble metal cpd. and then converting this to the corresp. noble metal. Only a small amt. of noble metal is needed and high melting metals can be used for the porous material. The material gives a cathode with very favourable work function and a shift of the satn. break point towards less heating power, so that the operating temp. can be reduced or the cathode current increases. At constant cathode current, the heating power is reduced 10-15%.
