Intermediate spacing unit for a typewriter carriage has in addition to the normal spacing pawl (34) an intermediate spacing pawl (28) which is swivable into the teeth of a toothed rod (31) by means of an intermediary lever (23) which lifts the normal spacing pawl. The intermediate spacing bar is disengaged by a further intermediary lever (41) which is operated after each typing operation and spacing by a control blade (37). The intermediate stepping key has a marker to indicate the position of the carriage along the width of typing. The unit can be modified for controlling movable paper carriages.
