A cancer diagnosis device has a photometric polarisation microscope for analysing a sample formed by mixing the patient's lymph cells with cancer cell protein. It produces stabilised reliable measurements of the degree of polarisation of blood sample fluroescence. The illumination system consists of a first system (1, 2, 3, 4) contg. a first aperture (3) and a photometric polarised illumination system contg. a second aperture (9), polariser (10) and filter (11). The illuminated sample (5) emits fluorescent light which passes to an analyser (16) transmitting fluorescence to light receivers (17a, 17b) connected to a signal processing system (18, 19) which determines the degree of polarisation. The result is displayed on an indicator.
