The winding gear guides a rope on and off a cylindrical drum particularly where the rope runs vertically off the drum. A holding rope (7) is wound on the drum (2) so that each coil of the main rope (1) is surrounded by a coil of the holding rope. Guides (26) direct the holding rope clear of the main one at the unwinding point. The ends of the holding rope can be fixed to the drum, and it can be of larger diameter than the main one.
