N-(2-Thenoyl)-cysteine cpds. of formula (I) are new: (where R is H or 1-8C alkyl). Cpds. (I) have a mucolytic activity which is generally superior to that of L-cysteine (II) and N-acetyl-L-cysteine (III), while having better oxidn. stability than (II) and not having the undesirable side-effects of (III); cpds. (I) have very low toxicity; e.g. LD5o 3750 mg/kg (rat).
