Collector of metal sheet esp. for steel comprises a row of stationary rolls arranged parallel with respect to each other and to a row of rolls for deviating the path of the strip, the second set of rolls being carried on a wagon which can be displaced horizontally along a path perpendicular to the forward direction, to produce a series of loops under tension in zig-zag fashion. The deviation rolls are mounted on lever arms of a roll carrier which in its initial posn. extends across the spaces between the stationary rolls, these spaces being larger than the roll dia. so that the movable rolls can pass between the stationary rolls carrying the sheet with them. Used for taking up slack in a continuous strip prodn. line before and after a treatment or inspection station or when rolls have to be changed.
