An appts. for measuring the luminescence of solids using a photomultiplier, incorporates a filter and a heater. The filter consists of two thin plates, of quartz and coloured silica glass. The heater carries a sample dish and is mounted so as to slide in a groove in a stand. It is in two parts, a base and a sliding block. The base has a hole in its lower surface into which the block fits, and a post on its upper surface, round which is wound a heating resistance, and which carries a platform on which fits a cap, with a hole for the sample dish. The heater is fitted with thermo-couples and a temp. controller. An adjustable shield between the photo-cathode of the photomultiplier and the filters protects the photomultiplier from ambient light, and is controlled by the same knob which controls the movement of the furnace. For operating at low temperatures, the heat support consist of a block, with an axial hole and a receiver for cooling liq., capable of sliding in the appts. stand. Useful in the study of material structure, e.g. of photo-elements and photo-luminescent diodes, in geology, in radiation protection, in archaeology, e.g. age measurements, and, at low temperatures, in studying organic crystals.
