A container for propagating plants, consists of a plate with a number of dish-shaped recesses, and close to or at the opposite short edges of the plate, legs which can be used to stack the plates one above the other. The legs may be tubular and slightly conical but have for pref. a channel section opening outwards from the plate. The legs extend through suitable holes in the plate, and are positioned in such a way that when two plates are positioned one above the other, the legs slide through, and the plates nest compactly. When the plates are turned relatively to each other through 90 degrees or 180 degrees, the legs of the one plate rest upon the plate below, and space is left for the rowing plants. Whilst allowing all the room necessary during growth and avoiding damage during transport, the empty trays fit into each other for storage and take up the minimum of room. During transport of plants, the legs allow ample light to reach the dishes in contrast to the obstruction of light by the support plates of conventional holders. With open channel legs, any compost falling in whilst the dishes are being filled, is easily removed. The use of legs also allows the maximum area of the plates to be used for propagation. The plates are produced from high impact polystyrene instead of foam so that thinner walls are possible giving the maximum compactness with adequate strength.
