Identifying and/or fighting bacteria in a medium takes place by combining one or more bacteria-contg. samples with one or more materials influencing growth properties of bacteria. The mixts. obtd. are incubated. Growth effect is evaluated by determining no. of bacteria in mixts. through adenosine triphosphate extn. from bacterial cells and estimating adenosine triphosphate content by bioluminescence. Growth effect study allows identification of bacteria present and selection of anti-bacterial agents. Process can take place directly in bacteria-contg. medium samples or in body fluids. Process allows (i) quick identification and detection of bacteria in urine and other body fluids, milk products, meat, other foods and water, and (ii) treating sensitivity of bacteria to antibiotics. Bacterial count, infection and bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics can be estimated in 3-5 hrs compared with 24-72 hrs. for standard process.
