A self centering control carriage transporting heads (3) over an unwinding band (1) comprises a pair of racks (4) engaging a common central pinion (6). At the commencement of centering on line (8), two hydraulic rams (7) extend the racks until one of a pair of abutments (5) engage the band edge. At this point continued extension of the ram (7) causes the carriage (2) to move across the band (1) until the second abutment engages the other band edge upon which the heads (3) are centralized.
