Converter with static inverter to raise frequency - permits use of small and light output transformer esp. for use as AC to DC converter in vehicle
The ac/dc converter, for converting 220 or 380V 50Hz ac into dc, has a first-rectifier consisting of a half-controlled thyristor bridge and a static inverter consisting of two transistors. The inverter converts the dc into an ac signal whose frequency is higher than that of the ac mains. The inverter output is coupled by a transformer to a second rectifier comprising a full wave diode bridge. The bridge output is smoothed. The advantage of converting the mains ac first into an ac signal of high frequency lies in being able to use a smaller and lighter transformer than would be the case if frequency had been 50Hz. This is esp. important if the converter is located in a vehicle.
