Emulsion polymerisation of vinyl! chloride - using sodium di:aryl di:alkyl sulphonate emulsifiers

PVC suitable for calendering is prepd. by polymsn. in aq. emulsion contg. =45% monomer, in presence of water-soluble catalyst and emulsifiers. The latter comprise Na salts of a mixt. of isomeric diaryl dialkylsulphonates contg. sulphonic acid gps. of formula (I) (where R1-3 are 0-16C linear satd. hydrocarbons, R1+R2+R3 contg. 8-16C and the sulphonic acids gps. being randomly distributed along the hydrocarbon chain). The PVC also has improved heat resistance, reduced colouration, and transparency.
