The automatic segmental sluice-gate is used to control the level of water of the tail-bay of a canal. The gate is of a bucket-construction and contains a mass of water, and the gate is stabilized transversely. The system also maintains equilibrium between the level of the contained mass and the level of bay waters. The bucket may be formed by the downstream face (2) of the gate-plate, two transverse segmental diaphragm plates (7), and a closing plate (8) which is fixed to the back edges of the diaphragms (7). The closure plate may be perforated (9). In alternative forms the closure plate (8) is removed and several intermediate transverse diaphragm plates (7) used.
