The toilet for a railway carriage has an overhead fresh water tank with a pipe leading to the pan. In the pipe is an electro valve, the opening of which is controlled by a timer relay. An emptying pipe is provided for the tank. A bowl emptying valve is opened by a pedal and is coupled to a pipe which leads to a waste tank. When the pedal is operated, the relay opens the valve for a timed period. At the same time, the emptying valve opens and empties the pan.
