Topical compsn. for use on the scalp. for treatment of seborrheic alopecia, dandruff, greasy hair and calvities contains (a) at least one aromatic cpd. having one or more quinonic or phenolic gps. opt. in the form of its salts or other derivs. e.g. substd. by halo and/or alkyl gps. and/or (b) at least one inhibitor of enzymatic reactive -SH gps. chosen from mercury salts and a liquid vehicle. The compsn. is used to treat seborrhic alopecia, dandruff, greasy hair and calvities which inhibits scalp enzymes without the inconvenience of using steroids. The preferred active cpd. is chosen from o-benzoquinone, p-benzoquinone, menadione (2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone), menadione sodium bisulphite, potassium o-oxyquinoline sulphate or sodium merthiolate (Thimerosal). The vehicle usually comprises water and/or a lower alkanol and contains 1-2.5 wt.% of active cpd.
