A water supply system intended for under-developed countries where surface water is scarce uses a double acting piston pump driven by a linear electric motor. The pump is placed at the bottom of a bore hole and supplied with electricity from a circuit which generates pulses to produce a reciprocating motion of the double piston. The electricity is generated from natural sources such as wind power or solar cells. The electric supply system incorporates accumulators or other means of energy storage for use when the natural sources are not available. This type of pump with a linear electric motor can run for long periods without attention.
