The resulting video signal is corrected for distortions caused by roll of the vehicle by a gyro stabilization device before before being recorded on magnetic tape. The recorded signal may be played back and displayed on a colour monitor the screen of which may be photographed. The infrared scanning and detection system 18, which for example includes a scanning mirror, may be transferred from an aircraft to the vehicle after an aerial scan of the scene has been effected. Regions of high heat loss in the buildings &c. so detected may be physically examined and repaired.
