SYSTEM FOR IMPROVING THE RELIABILITY OF SYSTEMS USING DIRTY MEMORIES

Enables any "dirty" hardware portion of main memory (i.e. "dirty" means causing correctable errors) in a computer system to be used for operations which read its contained data or program, as long as the content of the portion is not changed and an I/O copy of the identical content exists. The "dirty" condition indicates that the error correction capacity has already reached its limit for at least one unit of data in the memory portion. Whenever a change is required to be made in the content in a "dirty" portion, and before the change is permitted to be made, the invention automatically transfers the content to a "clean" hardware portion in the main memory (i.e. "clean" means causing no errors).
