PURPOSE:;To enable to stop an elevator cage in emergency with less number of parts used and high reliability by a device for stopping the cage of the type hung by a rope and the balance weight from dropping in emergency when the rope is broken. CONSTITUTION:In an elevator having a cage 23 elevated by a rope 1 fixed at one end thereof to a hitch plate 7 supported via a cage bearing beam 5 via a spring 6, wires 21a, 22a of two guide conduits 21, 22 are connected at one ends thereof through the plate 7 to the rope 1, and connected at the other to a lifting lever 18 as an actuator of an emergence cage 23 sides stopping device 24. When the rope 1 is broken while the cage 1 is elevating, the plate 7 is urged downwardly by the spring 6. The wires 21a, 22a are thus pulled to cause rollers 17 to be urged onto guide rails 20 so as to stop the cage 23 in emergency.
