Pleuromutilin solvates with a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon - useful for purifying crude pleuromutilin antibiotic

A solvate of pleuromutilin (I) with a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon (II) in the molar ratio of 1:1, is new. The solvate is useful for purifying (I), thus crude (I) can be converted into its solvate and which can be converted to pure (I) by e.g., heating. (I) is known antibiotic which can be converted into other pleuromutilin derivs. In an example, a solvate is prepd. by dissolving crude (I) in 1,1,1-trichloroethane, filtering off the insoluble impurities, cooling for 24 hrs. when the solvate crystallises out.
