L-lysine (I) is obtd by culturing a mutant Protaminobacter strain which can utilise MeOH and is resistant to S-(2-aminoethyl)-L-cysteine and L-threonine (esp. P.thiaminophagus ATCC 21926) in a nutrient medium contg. MeOH as C source, and isolating (I) from the culture broth. Fermentation is pref. effected at 20-40 degrees C. High yields of (I) (used in the foodstuffs industry) are obtd using a cheap and easy to handle C source.
