Indicator paper for amino acids is impregnated with an L-amino-oxidase, a peroxidase and a colour former. A 2-layer indicator typically contained one layer impregnated with 2,4-dichlorphenol, 4-aminoantipyrine and peroxidase and a second layer impregnated with 1-amino-oxidase; the paper turned pink then red in presence of phenylalanine. Used for simple, rapid detection of aminoacids, esp. that of phenylalanine in urine for diagnosis of phenylketonuria and phenylpyruvis oligophrenia and also for tyrosine and leucine.
