The upper part of the hull section at the stern is streamlined towards a flat stern with concave section sides terminating at a nearly horizontal ridge to separate the upper part of the hull from the lower part. The lower part is strongly contoured to channel the water flow over the screws and rudders, with the underside of the hull nearly flat. The two water flows are separated under the hull by a short keel. The water flows for the screws then flow smoothly round the narrow bottom of the hull and meet with reduced turbulence at the stern, while the water flows past the upper part of the hull are kept separated from these as far as possible.
