The dual purpose medical examination unit can be adapted for pre-natal examination, and converted for rectoscopic examination. In the first case, the patient is seated, and able to lean backwards. In the second case, the patient is in a kneeling position, with a support for the elbows. In the second position, two members extend forwards at an angle to support the knees from underneath, and an adjustable back rest in used. In the kneeling position, the knees are supported by an adjustable shaft at a lower level, and a cross member supports the patient's stomach. Behind this is a flat surface supporting the elbows. All the members can be fully adjusted, and can fold up as a unit with washing section attached.
