A notebook or diary includes a receptacle for a pen or pencil. The edges of the diary sheet are only bound in the upper and lower areas and there is a recess of largely rectangular shape between these bound in areas taking up part of the binding side of the sheets. The recesses are made on all sheets of the diary with the exception of at least one sheet at both the front and the rear end of the diary. All the recesses together form a chamber in the middle of the diary the size of which permits the insertion of a pen or pencil of normal size which may be connected to a book mark thread.
