Pharmaceutical intermediate ortho-nitro-benzaldehyde prodn. - by oxidn. of ortho-nitrostyrene with oxygen and thermolysis of resulting peroxide

In the prod. of o-nitrobenzaldehyde of formula (I), (a) o-nitrostyrene (II) is oxidised with O2 opt. in the presence of a diluent, and (b) the oxidn. is thermally cleaved. The reaction is pref. carried out in the presence of a catalyst, partic. a transition metal cpd. (I) can be used as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals. Despite the fact that (I) decomposes explosively at the temps. of the process, it is obtd. in high yield and purity.
