Streptamine intermediate all-trans-2,3-di:bromo-5-cyclohexene-1,4-diol - prepd. by sodium borohydride reduction of 2,3-di:bromo-5-cyclohexene-1,4-di:one

All-trans-2, 3-dibromo-5-cyclohexene-1,4-diol of formula (I) is new. (I) is prepd. by reducing an ethereal soln. of 2,3-dibromo-5-cyclohexane-1,4-dione with aq. NaBH4 soln. (I) is useful as an intermediate, e.g. for all-trans-1,4-diacetoxy-2,3-dibromo-5-cyclohexane, all-trans-1,4-dimesyloxy-2,3-dibromo-5-cyclohexene, all-trans-1,2,3,4-tetraacetoxy-5-cyclohexene, and antibenzenetrioxide. The latter is a known intermediate for streptamine derivs. such as dihydrostreptomycin.
