The IC engine valve operating cam has ascending (8) and descending (10) flanks with normal profiles. The dwell (13) between has a profile deviating from and flatter than the usual arc of a circle centered on the camshaft axis. Starting from a negative-acceleration portion of the ascending flank, this prefile pref. produces increasing acceleration, rising to a positive max. about midway before dropping away again to a negative final value.
