Tester for unconnected multicore electric cables - scans the cores and memorises the faults

A tester for multicore cables (10) has a clock (1) driving logic demultiplexers to scan (8) each core in sequence at the input plug (9) end and simultaneously uses multiplexers to monitor the corresponding core at the output and also the others connected together. Logic circuitry detects broken cores (12) and a short to any other core (13). Any such fault stops the scanning process and sounds an alarm and records in a memory the location of either fault (14, 15). Automatic or manual recommencement of scanning can take place. Simpler versions are described for cables with few cores in which the cores are placed all in series or all in parallel by suitable connections at the connectors.
